Que Sera, Sera

I'm watching Mary Tyler Moore followed by a Jimmy Stewart movie. With that being said, it's time for an update! Funny story about the episode of Mary Tyler Moore; it's the episode where the gang gets snowed in the studio by a huge blizzard. Coincidence? I'm not too sure... but really, Ed Asner hasn't changed one bit. In any case, this past Monday I only worked , and there wasn't much too exciting going on. Tuesday was a bit different, however. I received an email telling me that I was waitlisted at UIC. I definitely burst out crying, and Taryn, Clara, Vira, and Milry were all quite concerned. They comforted me, and I went to call my Mum.

After getting ahold of myself, I looked at my options. For the next few hours, I composed a letter to UIC listing why I was still interested in their school, my good grades for this past year, and an update in my dental activities (working 200 hours for 5 dentists in Australia!). I also faxed them my new transcripts. Mum and Dad starting helping me ask around for letters of recommendation to send to the school. Overall, I'm being pretty damn tenacious, so UIC better take notice of my ambition. The rest of the day I watched a laser whitening case, which was pretty cool. Personally I'd just do the whitening trays, but if people want to pay triple the cost, it's up to them.

On Wednesday, I watched and helped a bit with a three hour implant surgery, which was cool since I've never seen anything like that before. For the rest of the day, I helped Dr. Tiff Kinton, who is such a sweetheart. I have a lot of fun assisting for her. Today I also asked Dr. Obaid and Dr. Kinton for letters of rec, which they kindly obliged knowing that we need them in the States for dental school. They're so bewildered by how competitive dental school is in the States. They didn't even need prior experience or letters of recommendation. Tomorrow I'm going to ask Dr. Tam (he said yes!) and Dr. Brown for letters, so I'll have four altogether, which is AWESOME! Even more awesome than that is that I'll have a few more from a few other dentists. It might be a bit overboard, but right now, I'm willing to do just about anything that will get me accepted.

Applying to dental school is just an agonizing process that costs me time, money, and my mental health. I have great grades, a good test score, loads of experience, service hours, research experience, and loads of extracurricular activities. I don't understand what's not to love? Keep me in your prayers and keep your fingers crossed!! I'm trying to be positive, but it's not easy. I guess for now, I've got to accept what Doris Day is singing right now on the telly: “Que sera sera, whatever will be will be, the future's not ours to see, que sera sera, what will be will be”. Doris, I'm putting stock in your words right now more than ever, so don't steer me wrong. My Dad would be singing that song too right now if he were with me. I know he's finally realizing how difficult it is to get into dental school now the more he talks to other people. It's good to know that my ridiculous experience isn't limited to just me.

Work tomorrow and then MELBOURNE for the weekend!! And I will be updating a huge amount of photos, and I'll make sure to tell you when.

For now, keep rootin' for me, and hopefully I'll hear something soon. Also, I have two more interviews when I come back home, so all is not lost. Bless you all and que sera!!

p.s. Yes, it is at least 90 degrees. Every day. It's hard to miss home with this weather, but I still would love a few snow days.

  1. Chin up, girl! You've got the grades, the enthusiasm and the experience, and your tenacity won't go unnoticed. I have confidence that things will work out for you in the end and it will be because you made them happen. You've come so far and the journey isn't over yet!
Your mom also suggested we all pray to St. Jude for you...it certainly couldn't hurt. Love you!
